Netflix will offer a new online streaming service in the UK called The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in the coming months.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which will be available to rent online from March, will be streamed on Netflix UK, which has been co-owned by Netflix for a number of years.
“The Hobbit is one of the greatest stories of the modern era, and we’re delighted to offer this exciting new experience to fans across the UK,” said Jessica Leach, Netflix UK head of content.
“We know that this is a popular title amongst fans and our commitment to supporting the creative process makes it an ideal option for anyone who is looking to catch up on the iconic Middle-earth adventure.”
The Hobbit, released in the United States in 2005, is a story of the destruction of an entire city and the subsequent return of a hobbit to his family.
It is set in a fictionalised Middle-Earth known as the Misty Mountains, where the battle for the Dwarven homeland is taking place.
“It’s a story that’s very different from anything we’ve done before,” said Jeremy Gaffney, CEO of The Hobbits, a new franchise that is based in the US.
“You’ve got a great cast, a lot of great characters, and a very well-executed story.”
Netflix UK is launching its own streaming service called The Hobbit, which also has a new show called The King’s Gambit, a film about the Battle of the Blackwater.
It also plans to launch a new feature called The Dwarves, which is set at the end of The Lord of the Rings.
“A lot of people have asked for a streaming service that’s based on the Middle-eastern story, and I’m thrilled that Netflix has jumped on board to support it,” Mr Gaffny said.
“This new service will give fans the chance to discover The Hobbit through Netflix UK’s extensive library of films and TV shows, and the added benefits of a Netflix subscription.”
Mr Gaffy said The Hobbit would be available across the internet in a variety of ways, from free downloads to a full-featured streaming service.
“With this new service, we’re also making it easy for fans to access the entire series through one platform,” he said.
The company also plans an ambitious plan to make films in 2019 with the release of a new series called The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King, which was based on The Hobbit.
“Netflix has been working on our plans to introduce new content, including new films and shows, for a while,” Mr Leach said.
“The Hobbit will be one of our first major releases to feature a new cinematic universe.”
And of course, we’ll continue to support the world of Middle-Eastern storytelling as well as supporting the Hobbit in other ways.
