New Delhi, March 15 (PTI) The Indian capital will launch an online movie service on Thursday, a government official said.
The move is expected to be seen as a response to complaints that the rental of movies and TV shows online is hurting film lovers.
The service, to be called kedarkana movie, will allow people to rent and watch movies and tv shows in HD or SD format.
Kedarkan is the name of the region that includes Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
It is also home to the National Library of India.
Indian film distributor Anurag Verma and film production company The Cinemark were also among those to take part in the service.
The government had announced earlier that it would launch an e-commerce platform, which would allow users to rent, purchase and watch films and tv programs online from an Indian portal.
In the last year, movie and TV streaming services have been available in a number of countries including the US, Australia and UK.
The US government is currently evaluating a plan to make streaming of content easier to access, with a focus on the Indian market.
